Innovate or die. Traditional media are going through a deep crisis, the spread of new technologies affects them, and new generations are moving away. The mobile & digital content become the first source of training. According to Sceenic, watch together solution and winner of the French Football Federation Innovation Awards 2019, 80% of viewers use multiple screens while watching sports, 57% second screen while watching content. With Sceenic, Watch Together allows fans to enjoy video and voice chat in thousands of private rooms (a bit like Zoom), engaging them to have personal conversations whilst watching their favorite game. Watch together started in eSports where platforms allow such tools but is now growing in traditional sports.

First with the NFL with this new season. Verizon media´s Yahoo Sports app is introducing co-viewing experience that let users invite up to three people to watch NFL games on their mobile phones through a synchronized livestream. As a fan, you can see and hear your family & friends. And it started last Thursday on kick off game. NFL is also adding an augmented reality experience, called “Yahoo Sports PlayAR” that shows graphical replays of key plays across all games in almost real time. NFL is also launching “Next Gen” stats from Amazon Web Services: expected rush yards, route classification, expected points, win probability, expected yards after catch, field goal probability…

Sports developed innovative solutions to give Premier League fans an even more immersive experience and the opportunity to share it with family and friends:

  • Sky Sports Crowds: in association with EA Sports FIFA, Sky Sports created team-specific crowd noise and chants to replicate the vibrant atmosphere of Premier League clashes. Viewers can select the Sky channel to watch with the added sound or without it

  • Sky Sports Recap: catch up on all the key highlights during live matches in a short burst, putting an end to that fear of missing ot throughout a packed weekend of football. Each game will have a timeline enabling viewers to quickly catch up on the highlights at any point during the match, even if they have not watched from the beginning

  • Sky Sports Fanzone: a new feature on the Sky Sports website and app. Fans will now be able to watch select matches with friends in a video room and interact while the action unfolds, giving them the chance to chat about the match and influence the crowd noise they hear on screen. Users of the app can post predictions, join in-match polls and use the Sky Sports stats to fuel the virtual conversation.
